Love Local, PEI: Schurman Family Farms and Atlantic Grown Organics

Marc and Krista Schurman and their three children Ben, Quinton, and Samantha, own and operate Schurman Family Farm. Marc grew up on the family farm in Kensington, Prince Edward Island. After high school, he attended the Nova Scotia Agricultural College, where he met Krista, who grew up in Truro and had a passion for animals. Together, in 1997, Marc and Krista returned to PEI to work on the family farm.

They started the greenhouse business in 2001 as a way to diversify their farm operation. It was also to fulfil Marc’s passion for growing things.

In 2008 Marc, Krista and the kids left the farm and headed out on a life adventure to Mexico and Nova Scotia’s Annapolis Valley. In Mexico, Marc managed a 25-acre greenhouse, where he gained a great deal of knowledge and experience in greenhouse management. He also gained an even deeper appreciation for local agriculture and organic production. In 2011, Marc and Krista moved back to the family farm in Kensington and introduced the brand Atlantic Grown Organics to the Maritimes.

Their business has two names, Schurman Family Farm and Atlantic Grown Organics. Schurman Family Farms has been with them from the beginning and represents their values of a local, family run farm that supports and is a part of the local community. Their second name, Atlantic Grown Organics, is the name that they sell their produce under across Atlantic Canada in stores such as Sobeys, Loblaws and Walmart. We are the largest organic greenhouse in all of Atlantic Canada so they felt the name was fitting.

Providing nutritious organic food options all year round for the local community is very important to them. They are also committed to supporting other local farmers and businesses by purchasing from and working with them. Some great businesses that they work with are: Jen & Dereks Farm, Crystal Green Farms, Growers Station, Kays Wholesale, Master Packaging, Maple Bloom Farms, Soleils Farm, Wood 4 Heat, Armour and so many other amazing local businesses.

Their business would not be possible without the support of the local community so they are very thankful for each and every customer who signs up for a veggie box or stops by their farm stand or grabs a cucumber at their local grocery store.
